San Juan School District
Native American Collection
History
of the Collection
There are nearly 600 books in San Juan School District's Native American Collection,
which is housed in the District Media Center. In the early 1970's, a gentleman
from Denver, Colorado, contacted the Curriculum Development Center. For over
thirty years he had been amassing a personal collection of books about Native
Americans.
He was about to retire, and he wanted his collection to go where it could do the
most good. Through some articles he had read, he heard about our area and what
we were trying to accomplish, and he decided to
donate the volumes to San Juan School District where they would be closer to the
Navajo Reservation. We
accepted his generous offer and purchased enclosed book cases to house the collection.
Check Out Policy
Because the collection contains many books which are out of print or difficult
to find, only teachers and aides in San Juan School District are allowed to
check them out. Come to the Media Center in person or call Ext. 229 to request
a volume on the district media run. The checkout period is two weeks. While
they are checked out, we request that only teachers and aides handle the books.
They should not be loaned to students or community members.
Community members who want to use the volumes are invited to use them at the Media Center. If needed, we can make copies of pages for individual research purposes.
Finding
the Books You Want
In the near future, this page will contain a search engine to simplify the
process of finding what you want. For now, you can find books in three ways:
Click on your choice below. You may
need to spend a little
time, since key words may be embedded in the title. After the search engine has
been
completed, you will be able to do a subject search to find what you need.
