District Literacy Programs
L.E.A.P.
San
Juan School District
is committed to offering all students the best literacy instruction available.
A district
literacy committee was formed four years ago to begin to
look at the current state of literacy in the district and make recommendations
for improvement. Teacher representatives
from 10 schools in the district were
assigned to the committee.
The L.E.A.P.
(Literacy Empowers All People) committee members presently include:
| Karen Moore - Monticello Elementary | Mary Etsitty-Platero - Montezuma Creek Elementary |
| Judy Barton - Monticello High School | Gary McColloch - Whitehorse High School |
| JoAnn Smith - Blanding Elementary | Val Roberts - Mexican Hat Elementary |
| Bonnie Purcell - Albert R. Lyman Middle School | Gary Rock - Monument Valley High School |
| Kathy Hurst - District Office | Lynette Johnson - District Office |
Spring of 1996 saw an intensified effort to address the elementary reading program. Elementary principals met with elementary members of the L.E.A.P. committee to make recommendations for an elementary district reading plan. The 1997-98 school year has been a year of great growth for elementary programs. Needs of the secondary schools will be addressed soon.
