Sopris West Educational Services has arranged this Conference around the following target areas: Behavior, Positive Discipline, Data-Based Instruction, and Ethnic Celebration and Sensitivity. These themes will be woven together to develop a day of enrichment, challenge, and fulfillment.

3:00 - 3:45 Creating School Based Plans
* During rotations, the attendees will split in half and go to Marcus or Newton. During second rotation, speakers will switch audiences and repeat sessions.
Rotations:
Kim Marcum will demonstrate how to give students the essential skills and strategies to navigate a challenging curriculum. She will also present key ideas for implementing rituals and traditions that celebrate a sense of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.
Maurine Newton will give practical suggestions for classroom and schoolwide behavior management techniques which will establish a climate of dignity and respect. She will show how belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity can be encouraged directly by the staff as an integral part of a positive discipline system.

B.J. Wise, M.A. Ed., was Assistant Superintendent for Special Populations for Washington State and is now Northwest Regional Director for Sopris West. She has been an elementary principal and received the National Distinguished Principal Award. Wise has consulted throughout the United States and Europe.
Chenoa Egawa, B.A., is a multi-talented, passionate American Indian artist and professional. She has published two CDs containing Navajo and intertribal prayer songs. She is an actor and an illustrator. She has served as a trade specialist for the American Indian Trade and Development Council. She has volunteered extensively internationally. Egawa is currently a staff member at the University of Washington involved with recruiting native students and other underrepresented minorities into the math and science fields.
Kim Marcum, M.E.D., is currently a full time educational consultant. She has extensive background in special education, having taught learning disabled and behaviorally disabled students. She has been a principal for over 15 years and was awarded the Regional Distinguished Principal Award in Washington State. She has had extensive experience with native cultures in the Northwest and in Canada. Marcum is passionate about bringing out the best in every student—the citizens who will lead us in the future.
Maurine Newton, M.A. Ed., is currently the Principal of Uintah Elementary in Weber School District, Ogden, Utah. She was also the Principal of Valley View Elementary, which is a training site for the BEST Project through the Utah State Office of Education.
